Supporting Local Students
Established in 1997, the Saratoga Springs Rotary Education Foundation is a tax-exempt
organization that raises funds to support the post-secondary education and vocational
training of graduates from public and private high schools in the greater Saratoga community.
Graduates of Saratoga Springs High School, Saratoga Central Catholic High School, WSWHE BOCES and the
Waldorf School of Saratoga Springs have received scholarships.
New Scholarships Announced for 2025
The Saratoga Springs Rotary Education Foundation is pleased to announce the addition of three new endowed scholarships to benefit local students.
In 2024, the Rotary Education Foundation awarded $100,000 to 15 students in the Saratoga Springs area. Visit rotaryscholarships.org to apply online by April 1.
This year, the foundation is awarding three new scholarships, in addition to a variety of existing scholarships. To be eligible, students must reside in or attend school in the Saratoga Springs School District.
John V. O’Connell Memorial Scholarship:
This new scholarship was donated by Rotary Education Foundation Board Member Brian O’Connell, and his siblings Chris O’Connell, Theresa Chemburkar and Mary Clare House.
O’Connell and his siblings grew up in Saratoga Springs and their parents were active volunteers with St. Clement’s Church, the Boy Scouts, Saratoga Hospital, Saratoga Children’s Committee and numerous other groups. The Rotary Club played a significant role in their father’s life, including serving as president. The O’Connell children were all fortunate enough to continue their education and graduate from college, some with advanced degrees.
“Creating a scholarship in our father’s name reflects his dedication to the Saratoga Springs Rotary and its mission within the local community,” said Brian O’Connell. “It also recognizes the impact that continuing education has on students’ lives, allowing them to pursue fulfilling careers and be active in their communities.”
This scholarship will be awarded with preference to students showing financial need, studying business and to first-generation college students.
Robert and Lisa Schermerhorn Scholarships:
Two new scholarships have been established by longstanding Rotary Education Board Member Bob Schermerhorn and his wife, Lisa.
One scholarship is in recognition of Bob’s career in finance and his alma mater, giving preference to finance or business majors and students who will be attending Siena College.
Another scholarship is in recognition of Lisa’s career in computer science, giving preference to computer science majors.

A Goal for the Future
Each year, the Foundation receives funds from both the Saratoga Springs Rotary Club and private donors. The Foundation has surpassed its initial goal of raising $1 million in endowed funds, ensuring scholarships in perpetuity for local students.
The organization’s major fundraiser is its annual scholarship awards dinner that honors the selected scholarship recipients, community leaders and educators.
Professional Investment Management
The Foundation’s endowment is managed by The Adirondack Trust Company of Saratoga Springs. Excluding expenses, all donations received go toward awarded scholarships or building the endowment, at an average rate of 85 cents for every dollar. The Foundation’s Board Members volunteer their time and services.
